THE SEASON THAT RHYMED WITH VICTORY

Mark Twain once said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes." For the Vegas Knight Hawks, the echoes of their 2024 heartbreak became the chorus of their 2025 triumph.

In the first round of the 2024 playoffs, Vegas held a 38-33 lead over the Arizona Rattlers. Lined up inches from the goal line, with two seconds left in the game, Arizona quarterback Dalton Sneed would charge in for the game winning score as time expired.

The pain of 2024 lingered, but it also prepared the Knight Hawks for the challenges that would follow in 2025

One year following that defeat, Vegas was once again in the playoffs. This time, their first-round opponent was the top-seeded Bay Area Panthers. The final play of the game was a Bay Area Hail Mary pass that was broken up by wide receiver CJ Windham Jr. in the end zone. The offensive player was sent in on defense due to his height and vertical in hopes he could do exactly what he did - get a hand on the ball to secure the win.

The following week, in the Western Conference Championship, the San Diego Strike Force decided to gamble. They kept the offense on the field on fourth down in overtime rather than kick a field goal. The Vegas defense prevented the conversion, and quarterback Ja'Rome Johnson would score the game-winning touchdown on a tush-push on the next possession.

Survival against Bay Area, resilience against San Diego, and it all led to this: the final verse in the Knight Hawks' season.

Now 13 months removed from their painful loss to Arizona, the Knight Hawks found themselves in an eerily similar situation in the National Championship. Lined up inches from the goal line, holding a 64-61 lead with five seconds left in the season, the Vegas defense was once again tasked with stopping a quarterback from dashing their dreams.

Just as San Diego had two weeks prior, the Green Bay Blizzard would forgo the field goal and keep the offense on the field. They sent in quarterback Max Meylor for a tush-push, attempting to mirror Vegas' win from two weeks prior. The Blizzard had successfully used that play to convert for a touchdown or a first down every time they ran it in 2025.

Echoing the strategy used in Bay Area, Vegas sent in a big body from the offense to help seal the game on defense. It was 330-pound offensive lineman Moses Mallory entering the game at nose tackle to help stuff the initial push. The defensive front's efforts held up Meylor long enough for James Ceasar and Chizzi Umunakwe to get into the backfield and pull Meylor backwards, securing the win for the Knight Hawks.

In Henderson in 2024, Knight Hawks players walked off the field with tears in their eyes. In 2025, they stormed onto the field with tears of joy after accomplishing a goal that was years in the making. They celebrated against the backdrop of the Vegas fans that had make the journey to Tucson. They were picking each other up, literally rather than figuratively.

From tragedy to triumph, the Knight Hawks righted all the wrongs of 2024 to secure their place in history in 2025.

There will never be another season like this one for the Knight Hawks – the organization's first championship, and Lee's Family Forum's first banner. But as long as football is played in Vegas, the Knight Hawks will strive to make every season rhyme with 2025.
